How much hosting do I need?

Enter a few numbers about your site and get an estimate of the storage and monthly bandwidth it needs. It compares the result with Traxio’s 3GB of storage and 100GB a month, and tells you plainly if it won’t fit.

Storage needed: – of 3GB

Bandwidth a month: – of 100GB

Sets the software size and a typical page weight.
Photos and graphics across the whole site.
A phone photo is 3–5MB; resized for the web, 0.2–0.4MB.
PDFs, downloads, forum attachments.
A blog with a few hundred posts is usually under 50MB.
Mailboxes share the same 3GB.
Check your current stats if you have them.
Two to four is typical.
What one page downloads on a first visit. Measure it with your browser’s developer tools.

How the estimate works

Storage is the software (WordPress with a theme and a few plugins is roughly 250MB; a plain HTML site is a few MB), plus your images and files, the database and any email you keep on the server. Email counts because mailboxes share the same 3GB.

Bandwidth is visitors × pages per visit × page weight, plus 15% for search engine crawlers and repeat downloads. Browsers cache images and stylesheets, so returning visitors usually download far less. That makes the figure a cautious one.

It’s an estimate, not a promise. Real sites vary, and a single viral post can use a month’s bandwidth in a day. If you already have a site, your current host’s statistics are better than any calculator. Hosting limits explained.

What usually fills 3GB

  • Unresized photos. A phone photo is 3–5MB. Resized for the web it’s 0.2–0.4MB, so the same 3GB holds about ten times as many. Image optimisation.
  • Backups left on the server. A full DirectAdmin backup can be as big as the site itself. Download it, then delete the copy. Reduce disk usage.
  • Email. Years of attachments add up. Set mailbox quotas, or use an external email provider. Mailbox quotas.
  • Video. Host video on YouTube or Vimeo and embed it. Streaming video isn’t what shared hosting is for.

Rough guide

Site Typical storage Typical monthly bandwidth
A few HTML pages under 50MB under 2GB for a few thousand visits
A WordPress blog with a few hundred posts 500MB–1.5GB 5–20GB
A small business site 300MB–1GB 2–10GB
A forum with a few hundred active members 300MB–1.5GB 10–40GB
A small WooCommerce shop 700MB–2GB 10–40GB

These are typical ranges, not limits. The calculator above uses your own numbers.
