FTP connection failed: how to fix it

Fix FTP login failures, timeouts and ‘failed to retrieve directory listing’ with the right host, username format, encryption and passive mode.

530 Login authentication failed

  • Additional FTP accounts log in with the full name: dev@yourdomain.co.uk.
  • Your main login uses your DirectAdmin username.
  • Reset the FTP account’s password in Account Manager then FTP Management and try again. How to create an FTP account
  • Repeated failures can temporarily block your IP; wait before retrying.

Connection timed out

  • Host: use your domain or the server address from your welcome email. If the domain was only just connected, use the server address.
  • Port: 21 for FTP.

Failed to retrieve directory listing

Login succeeded, but the data connection failed.

  • In FileZilla: Edit → Settings → Connection → FTP → set Passive mode.
  • Use Require explicit FTP over TLS rather than plain FTP; some routers mangle unencrypted FTP.
  • Try SFTP, which uses a single connection and avoids this entirely.

Certificate prompt on connect

FTP over TLS shows the server’s certificate. Check the details relate to your hosting server and accept.

It connects, but you can’t see your files

The FTP account’s directory may be limited to a folder. Edit it in Account Manager then FTP Management, or connect with your main login.
