Free web hosting for small websites
A small website uses a fraction of what it is usually sold. Here is what one actually consumes, which numbers on a hosting page mean anything, and where the money is better spent. Traxio itself is free for 30 days with no card, then 99p a month.
- No card to start
- No setup fee
- Then £0.99/month
You are almost certainly being oversold
Hosting is sold by capacity because capacity is easy to put on a comparison table. The result is that small websites are routinely sold ten or a hundred times the resources they will ever use, and the customer pays for the headroom every month for years.
So it is worth knowing what a small site genuinely consumes. The numbers below are typical rather than universal, but they are the right order of magnitude, and they make most hosting comparisons look rather different.
What small sites actually use
| Type of small site | Typical disk use | Typical monthly transfer |
|---|---|---|
| Five-page brochure site, hand built | 20–80MB | Under 1GB at a few hundred visits |
| WordPress business site with a theme and a few plugins | 300MB–1GB | 1–3GB at a thousand or so visits |
| Small blog, two years of posts | 200–800MB | 1–4GB depending on image weight |
| Portfolio with 40 resized images | 100–400MB | 2–5GB — image pages are heavy |
| Small forum, a few hundred members | 200MB–1GB | 2–6GB — logged-in pages are database-heavy but light on transfer |
Bandwidth is about page weight
Read the right-hand column carefully, because bandwidth is the figure that usually binds first and it is driven by page weight, not visitor count. A page carrying 1MB of assets and a page carrying 5MB differ by a factor of five in bandwidth for exactly the same audience. Resizing images is therefore the cheapest capacity upgrade available, and it costs nothing.
Against those numbers, Traxio's published 3GB of storage and 100GB of monthly bandwidth are comfortable for every row in that table, with the honest caveat that an image-heavy site at the top of its range could approach the bandwidth ceiling. That is precisely why the number is published rather than described as unlimited.
Four things worth more than a bigger plan
What to spend money on instead
If a small site has a budget, hosting is rarely where it should go. A decent domain, an hour of someone's time to compress the images, and a properly written page of copy will each do more for the site than a hosting upgrade will.
What over-specified hosting does not fix
Slow sites are usually slow because of what is on the page, not where it is served from. Moving an unoptimised WordPress site to a bigger plan generally produces a barely measurable improvement, at several times the cost.
What actually makes sites fasterThe specification that does matter
A current PHP version, free SSL, a real control panel, and a renewal price that matches the advertised one. Those four have more effect on your experience over three years than any storage figure.
The full checklistWhen a small site stops being small
Three signals: bandwidth consistently near its ceiling, a database growing quickly, or checkout and search feeling sluggish under load. Those are reasons to move up. Wanting a bigger number on the invoice is not.
