An SRV (service) record says which host and port provide a particular service for a domain. Rather than assuming a fixed port, a client looks up the service by name.
_sip._tls.yourdomain.co.uk. 3600 IN SRV 100 1 443 sipdir.online.example.com.
Reading the name
_service._protocol.name:
_sip— the service_tls— the protocolyourdomain.co.uk— the domain
Reading the value
| Field | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Priority | 100 | Lower is preferred, like MX priority |
| Weight | 1 | Share of traffic between records with equal priority |
| Port | 443 | The port the service runs on |
| Target | sipdir.online.example.com. | The host providing it |
Who uses SRV records
- Some voice and calling services (SIP)
- Chat protocols such as XMPP
- Some games and Minecraft servers
- Autodiscovery for certain email and calendar clients
For typical websites and Traxio email, you won’t need one. Services that do need one give you all four values to copy.
Adding one
Enter the record type, name and fields exactly as your service provides. If you’re adding it on a Traxio-connected domain and SRV doesn’t appear in the record type list in Account Manager then DNS Management, ask the help desk rather than improvising with another record type.
