MX records: how email finds your mail server

What MX records are, how priority works, the correct MX for Traxio email, and how to change MX records for Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.

An MX (mail exchanger) record tells the world which server accepts email for your domain. Without a correct MX record, mail to your addresses can’t be delivered.

yourdomain.co.uk. 3600 IN MX 10 mail.yourdomain.co.uk.

The parts

  • Priority (10) — lower numbers are tried first. Additional MX records with higher numbers are backups.
  • Target (mail.yourdomain.co.uk) — a hostname, never an IP address. That hostname needs its own A record.

For Traxio email

With Traxio nameservers, DirectAdmin creates the right MX record automatically. It points at your domain’s mail hostname on your Traxio server. You don’t need to change anything to use Traxio mailboxes.

Using an external email provider

To use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 for email while your website stays on Traxio:

  1. Open Account Manager then DNS Management for your domain.
  2. Delete the existing MX record(s) pointing at your Traxio mail server.
  3. Add the MX record(s) your provider gives you, with their priorities.
  4. Add the provider’s SPF and verification TXT records.

Using Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 email with Traxio hosting has the details, including the local mail setting you must change.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the old MX in place alongside a new one: some mail goes to each server.
  • An IP address as the target. MX targets must be hostnames.
  • Recreating email records elsewhere after moving nameservers. Email stopped working after changing nameservers
