Add a DNS record and prove it works

Add an A, CNAME, MX or TXT record in DirectAdmin, then check the authoritative answer and public DNS so you know it’s live.

IntermediateAbout 15 minutes7 steps

What you’ll need

  • DirectAdmin access
  • The record details you’ve been given (type, name, value)
  • A terminal or an online DNS lookup tool

Adding a record takes a minute; confirming it’s correct is where most people skip ahead and get stuck. This tutorial does both, using a TXT verification record as the example.

Before you begin: Check your nameservers point to Traxio. If they don’t, add the record at your DNS provider instead. Nameservers vs DNS records: what’s the difference?

Steps

  1. Step 1: Read the instructions you were given

Note the type, name (host) and value. If the name is shown as @, it means the domain itself. If it’s shown as a full name like _verify.yourdomain.co.uk, you’ll enter only _verify.

  2. Step 2: Open DNS Management

Open Account Manager then DNS Management and choose your domain.

  3. Step 3: Add the record

Select Add Record, choose the type, and enter the name and value. For the domain itself, use the domain name followed by a dot. Save. How to add, edit and delete DNS records in DirectAdmin

  4. Step 4: Look at the record list

Find your new record in the list. Check the name doesn’t show your domain twice.

  5. Step 5: Ask Traxio’s nameserver directly

    dig @ns1.traxio.co.uk _verify.yourdomain.co.uk TXT +short

On Windows: nslookup -type=txt _verify.yourdomain.co.uk ns1.traxio.co.uk. Your value should come back.

  6. Step 6: Check public DNS

Run the same lookup without @ns1.traxio.co.uk, or use an online DNS checker. New records usually appear within minutes. How to check DNS records (dig, nslookup and online tools)

  7. Step 7: Complete the service’s check

Select Verify (or equivalent) in the service that asked for the record.

Check it worked

Both the direct query to ns1.traxio.co.uk and a public lookup return exactly the value you were given, and the service confirms verification.
