Email stopped working after changing nameservers

Why mail stops when you move a domain’s DNS, and how to restore Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or old-host email records at Traxio.

Does this match what you’re seeing?

  • Email stopped arriving right after pointing the domain to Traxio
  • Senders get bounces for your address
  • Your Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace mailbox is suddenly empty of new mail

Changing nameservers replaces all of your domain’s DNS. The MX and TXT records that sent mail to your email provider lived at the old DNS provider and weren’t copied.

Where is your email meant to go?

To Traxio mailboxes? The default MX record at Traxio already points to your Traxio server. Create the mailboxes if you haven’t. How to create an email account in DirectAdmin Mail sent while mailboxes didn’t exist bounced and won’t reappear.

To Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or another provider? You need to recreate their records at Traxio.

Restoring an external provider’s records

  1. Get the records from your provider’s admin screen (Microsoft 365 admin centre → Domains; Google Workspace admin → Domains) or from notes of your old DNS.
  2. In Account Manager then DNS Management: - delete the MX records pointing at Traxio - add the provider’s MX records - add their SPF include to your SPF record - add DKIM records and any autodiscover CNAME they list
  3. Wait for the new records to be seen (usually minutes; up to the old TTL).

Did mail get lost?

Most sending servers retry for a day or more before bouncing, so mail delayed during a short gap often arrives once records are fixed. Mail sent while records pointed to a server with no mailbox for you will have bounced; the senders were told.

Next time

Before changing nameservers, list the domain’s current MX, TXT and CNAME records, and add them at Traxio first.
