Two good choices
MediaWiki
The software behind Wikipedia. Powerful templates, categories and talk pages, and the editing style millions of people already know. It needs a MySQL database, which every Traxio account includes.
Choose it for: larger wikis, game and fan wikis, and anything where you want infoboxes and templates.
DokuWiki
A lighter wiki that stores pages as plain text files, so there’s no database to look after and backups are just a folder. Simple syntax and a clean admin panel.
Choose it for: documentation, club handbooks, team notes, small private wikis, and running alongside a WordPress site or forum that already uses the account’s database.
Both are free, open-source software and both are in Softaculous, the one-click installer in DirectAdmin. Other wiki engines that run on PHP can be uploaded by hand.
Set up a wiki
- Start your free 30 days and connect your domain. Many people put the wiki on a subdomain such as wiki.yourname.co.uk: create a subdomain.
- Install it. In DirectAdmin, open Softaculous, search for MediaWiki or DokuWiki, choose the domain or subdomain and click Install. Softaculous creates the database for MediaWiki.
- Decide who can edit. This is the most important setting. An open wiki that anyone can edit without an account will be filled with spam within days. Start with editing for registered users only, or invited users only.
- Add the essentials: a main page that explains what the wiki is for, a style guide, and a few starter pages so new editors can copy the format.
- Plan backups. Download a full backup from DirectAdmin regularly: create a full backup. DokuWiki’s pages are files; MediaWiki’s live in the database.
Keeping a wiki healthy
- Spam. For MediaWiki, require accounts to edit, turn on a CAPTCHA for sign-ups and review recent changes regularly. DokuWiki’s access control lists can limit editing to named users or groups.
- Updates. Both projects publish security releases. Softaculous can tell you when one is available. Updating is your job: keep software updated.
- Images. Uploads use your 3GB of storage. Resize images before uploading, and link to video rather than uploading it.
- Private wikis. Both can be set to require a login to read, which suits internal or club-only documentation.
Wiki hosting compared with free wiki farms
Free hosted wikis such as Fandom are quick to start and cost nothing. They show adverts to your readers, the platform decides the layout and rules, and moving away later can be awkward. Hosting your own wiki means no adverts, your own domain, full control of extensions and settings, and a database and files you can take anywhere. In exchange you install updates yourself. If you want zero maintenance, a hosted wiki farm is the easier choice.
Wiki hosting questions
Is wiki hosting free?
For your first 30 days, with no card needed. After that it’s £0.99 a month if you keep it, for the whole account, however many pages and editors the wiki has.
Can I run a wiki and a website on one account?
Yes. Each account includes one domain plus subdomains, so yourname.co.uk can be your website and wiki.yourname.co.uk your wiki. One database is included, enough for one database-driven app such as WordPress, a forum or MediaWiki. To run two side by side, pair one with something that needs no database (a plain HTML site or DokuWiki), or install the second by hand into the same database with its own table prefix, which most PHP apps support.
How big can my wiki be?
Text takes very little space. Thousands of pages of text fit easily in 3GB; images take most of the space. The hosting calculator helps you estimate.
Can I import an existing MediaWiki?
Yes, if you have its database export and images folder. Import the database with phpMyAdmin and upload the files: import a database.
