Short answer
You set the quota yourself when you create the mailbox, and it comes out of your 3GB of account storage — email and website files share the same space. Around 500MB to 1GB suits most addresses.
A mailbox that fills up stops accepting new mail, and senders get a bounce. If you are running short of space, old messages with large attachments are usually where it has gone.
