What is uptime and what does 99.9% mean?

Quick answerBeginnerUpdated

Short answer

Uptime is the proportion of time a server is reachable. 99.9% sounds absolute but allows around 43 minutes of downtime a month; 99.99% allows about four. Scheduled maintenance is usually excluded from the figure.

This is a general web-hosting explanation, not specific to Traxio.

Worth knowing when comparing hosts: an uptime percentage is only as good as what it excludes and whether anything happens when it is missed. Most of the downtime a small site actually experiences comes from its own code or an expired domain rather than from the server.
