Short answer
It is the three-digit number a server returns with every response, saying what happened. 200 means fine, 3xx is a redirect, 4xx means the request was wrong (404, 403), and 5xx means the server itself failed (500, 502, 503).

The first digit is the useful part when something breaks: a 4xx points you at the request — a bad URL, a permission, a missing file — while a 5xx points you at the server or the code running on it.
