What’s the difference between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress?

Quick answerBeginnerUpdated

Short answer

WordPress.com is a hosted service with its own plans and restrictions. Self-hosted WordPress — the free software from WordPress.org — is what you install on your own hosting, where you control the plugins, the theme and the data. Traxio runs the self-hosted kind.

This is a general web-hosting explanation, not specific to Traxio.

The restriction people run into most on the hosted service is plugins: installing your own generally requires an upper-tier plan. Self-hosted has no such limit.
