Short answer
The website and email stop working immediately, and the domain enters a grace period during which you can usually still renew it — at increasing cost as time passes. After that it can be released for anyone to register.
A domain is renewed wherever it is registered — in the Traxio client area if you registered it through Traxio, or at your other registrar if not. Hosting being paid up does not keep a domain alive. Paying renewals on time and keeping the contact address current is the whole of the fix.
