Short answer
Subdomains are the right tool for a staging copy, a documentation site or a small side project that can live at docs.yourdomain.com rather than needing its own domain name.
A word of warning about changing the domain on an existing account: DirectAdmin allows it, but Traxio’s DNS Guard keeps checking the domain the account was created with, so changing it can get the account suspended. Add the new domain as an extra domain instead.
All the sites on an account share its storage and bandwidth, and each app usually needs its own database (one is included; extras are a one-off £0.99).
