DirectAdmin questions
8 short answers about DirectAdmin. Each one links on to the full article and, where there is one, a step-by-step tutorial.
- What can I do in DirectAdmin?
Everything that runs your hosting account: upload and edit files, create email addresses and mailboxes, set up MySQL databases, edit DNS records, manage SSL, add subdomains, schedule cron jobs and take backups. Billing and cancellation are the exceptions — those live in the client area.
- What is my DirectAdmin username?
It is in your welcome email, and it is the same username that prefixes your databases and FTP accounts. If you open DirectAdmin from your hosting service in the client area you are signed in automatically and never need to type it.
- How do I change my DirectAdmin password?
Open Account Manager then Change Password in DirectAdmin and set a new one. This is the hosting account password, which is separate from your client area password — changing one does not change the other.
- How do I password-protect a folder on my website?
Use Advanced Features then Password Protected Directories in DirectAdmin: choose the folder, turn protection on and add a username and password. Visitors then get a browser login box before they can see anything in it.
- Where do I find my website statistics and logs?
In DirectAdmin under System Info & Files then Site Summary / Statistics / Logs. You get visitor statistics plus the raw access and error logs for your domain — the error log is the one to read when something on the site is failing.
- How do I check how much disk space I’m using?
DirectAdmin shows your disk and bandwidth usage against your limits on the main dashboard as soon as you log in. For a breakdown of what is actually taking the space, the File Manager can sort a folder by size.
- Can I change the domain name on my hosting account?
DirectAdmin will let you, but on Traxio you should not. DNS Guard keeps checking the domain the account was created with, so changing it can get the account suspended. If you need a different domain, take out a new hosting account instead.
- How do I edit a file without downloading it?
Open System Info & Files then File Manager, find the file and use the edit option — it opens in a text editor in the browser and saves straight back to the server. This is the quickest way to make a small change to
.htaccess,wp-config.phpor a stylesheet.
